

Janet Damita Jo Jackson, born May 16, 1966, is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and dancer. She is known for her innovative, socially conscious, and sexually provocative records, as well as elaborate stage shows. Her sound and choreography contributed to the growth of MTV and helped her rise to prominence while breaking gender and racial barriers. Her lyrical content often addressed social issues and personal experiences, appealing to youth audiences. Jackson is the youngest child of the Jackson family and appeared in television shows during the 1970s and early 1980s, including Good Times, Diff'rent Strokes, and Fame. She signed with A&M Records in 1982 and achieved international fame with the albums Control (1986) and Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989). These works led to crossover success in popular music and influenced the development of the new jack swing genre. In the 1990s, Jackson became one of the highest-paid musicians, signing major record deals with Virgin Records.
