Johannes Brahms was a German composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor of the mid-Romantic period. He was born on 7 May 1833 in Hamburg and died on 3 April 1897. His music is characterized by rhythmic vitality and a freer treatment of dissonance, often within studied yet expressive contrapuntal textures. Brahms adapted the traditional structures and techniques of a wide range of earlier composers. His works include four symphonies, four concertos, a Requiem, chamber music, and numerous folk-song arrangements and Lieder. He began composing and performing locally in Hamburg and later toured Central Europe as a pianist, premiering many of his own compositions. During his career, he met Franz Liszt in Weimar and collaborated with Ede Reményi and Joseph Joachim, seeking the approval of Robert Schumann, whose support and guidance he received along with that of Clara Schumann. Brahms stayed with Clara in Düsseldorf and maintained a close, lifelong friendship with her after Robert Schumann's institutionalization and death. He never married, possibly to focus on his work as a musician and scholar.
