Laibach is a Slovenian avant-garde music group formed in 1980 in Trbovlje, Slovenia. The band is associated with the industrial, martial, and neoclassical genres and functions as the musical wing of the Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) artist collective, which it co-founded in 1984. From its inception, Laibach was subject to controversies and bans due to its use of iconography that parodied and pastiched elements of totalitarianism, nationalism, and militarism, a theme maintained throughout its career. The band was censored in Yugoslavia and gained a dissident status, developing a cult following domestically. It undertook international tours and gradually gained recognition outside Slovenia, leading to increased acceptance within the Yugoslav public and attention from mainstream media. Following Slovenia's independence in 1991, Laibach's position shifted from rejection by some segments of the public to recognition as a national cultural icon. Their early albums featured industrial sounds characterized by heavy rhythms and vocals, while their mid-1980s work incorporated more layered textures with samples from pop and classical music.
