Metal Church is an American heavy metal band formed in 1980. The band was originally based in San Francisco, California, before relocating to Aberdeen, Washington, in 1981. Initially called Shrapnel, the group was led by guitarist and songwriter Kurdt Vanderhoof. They have released thirteen studio albums and are considered part of the early Seattle heavy metal scene of the 1980s. Metal Church is also recognized as a pioneer in the thrash metal, speed metal, and power metal genres. During the 1980s, the band achieved notable popularity, with two of their first three albums reaching the Top 100 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. Their early lyrics addressed themes such as conflict and paranoia, later expanding to include philosophical, political, and social commentary. Throughout their 46-year history, Metal Church has experienced a revolving lineup of vocalists, guitarists, bassists, and drummers. Kurdt Vanderhoof remains the band's only consistent member, although he shifted to a solely compositional role in 1986 after becoming less involved in live performances. The classic lineup, consisting of Vanderhoof, vocalist David Wayne, guitarist Craig Wells, bassist Duke Erickson, and drummer Kirk Arrington, recorded the band's first two albums, 'Metal Church' (1984) and 'The Dark' (1986).
