Souled American is an American alternative country band from Chicago that was active mainly in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The band was formed in 1986 by four musicians from Illinois: Chris Grigoroff (rhythm guitar and vocals), Joe Adducci (bass and vocals), Scott Tuma (lead guitar), and Jamey Barnard (drums). They released six records between 1988 and 1995. Barnard left during the recording of their fourth album, Sonny, and Tuma departed during the making of their sixth album, Notes Campfire. Since then, the band has continued as a duo consisting of Adducci and Grigoroff, supported by various other musicians. In 2023, Grammy Award-winning musician Jeff Tweedy mentioned Souled American in his book, World Within a Song, noting that although they were contemporaries of his band Uncle Tupelo, they did not achieve widespread popularity. Tweedy also remarked that a song by Souled American he discussed was likely the hardest track to find among his writings about the band.
