Dong Young-bae, born May 18, 1988, is a South Korean singer and songwriter known by his stage names Taeyang and SOL. He debuted in 2006 as a member of the boy band BigBang. In 2008, he released his first extended play, Hot, which received critical acclaim and won the Best R&B & Soul Album award at the 6th Korean Music Awards. His first full-length studio album, Solar, was released in July 2010 and reached the top of the Gaon Album Chart. His second studio album, Rise, was released in 2014 and peaked at number 112 on the US Billboard 200, making it the highest-charting album by a Korean soloist on that chart. The lead single from Rise, "Eyes, Nose, Lips," peaked at number one on the Billboard K-pop Hot 100 and was one of the most popular songs in South Korea during 2014. It received awards for Song of the Year at the MAMA Awards, Melon Music Awards, and Golden Disc Awards.
