Midlands five-piece Easy Life recently emerged with their "93 BPM head-nodder”, ‘Pockets’ - a rich hip-hop, funk and jazz- infused debut single full of irresistible hooks and the trials of youth. This is just the beginning.
Hey Murray, tell us about your band - how did you all meet and decide to start making music together?
Essentially, we are all musicians living in fairly close proximity hence we have wound up playing together. I feel this is probably a universal story for any group of individuals that is lucky enough to create together. Myself (Murray- lead vocals, guitar etc.) and Sam (bass, sax, vocals) went to school together and have always found common ground is disgusting funk/soul/jazz. After realising this, we began to write music and somewhat inevitably meet Louis ( local guitar icon and sex sensation). Cass (drums) was an obvious choice, with his passion for Afro Beat and all things groovy and Jordan (percussion/ synths/ vocals) is a local hero and by far the most famous member of the band for various reasons. The team expands far beyond us five musicians, all of whom are creatives searching for something worth investing their energies in. It's always felt like something special since we started at the beginning of the year (2017) and since then all our favourite people have got involved in the project. We feel truly blessed to have such a wonderful family of creatives aspiring for the common goal of a good time had by all.
Did you have a musical upbringing?
A few of the lads in the band have had very thespian upbringings surrounded by musicians and creatives alike. In particular, Jordan's (synths/percussion/bvs) old man was the sax player in The Beautiful South and these days has the privilege of fronting the band. A nice bit of trivia for you to digest. Personally, neither of my parents are rockstars or famous composers but are both definitely lovers of the arts in all its various guises. I had the pleasure of growing up on a working organic farm which isn't strictly musical, but the sheep and the cattle have inspired many beats, for sure.
How did you hook up with Chess Club Records for your debut EP?
Mr Street came up to our rehearsal space in deepest, darkest Leicester and we hung out, drank coffee, played some tunes etc. and it just felt like a good fit. We feel blessed to be working with a label that is ethical, successful and small enough to give a shit.
