Fading Echo is now available on PlayStation 5, with developer Emeteria also releasing a demo for anyone keen to test its elemental action-adventure RPG before taking on the full game. Players take the role of One, a young Legend trying to save Corel, a world splintered into alternate realities and consumed by a force called the Paradox.
At the centre of One’s toolkit is Æther, the water-like element of Fading Echo’s world. She can manipulate it against enemies, fire waves and charged blasts, and transform into a mobile blob to build momentum, surf through pipes, slip through cracks and launch herself across the environment. That movement serves exploration and puzzles as much as combat, including the option to drop onto enemies in a water-bomb.
Elemental reactions are designed to make encounters less about finding one dependable combo. Drenching an enemy can allow energy to be conducted through them, while Æther can react with lava, toxic waste and Paradox corruption. Players can also solidify elements and use surrounding hazards to change a fight, with the game encouraging experimentation over a single prescribed solution.
Corel’s instability also drives Fading Echo’s reality-shifting system. One can move between different versions of the same location, changing possible routes, puzzle solutions and the resources or hazards available in combat. A blocked path in one reality may be open in another, while an element needed to progress could be waiting on the other side of a shift.
The story takes One across floating islands as Paradox Corruption spreads through Corel. Maddock, described as the ruthless leader of the Paradox on the world, stands in her way, while a small group of allies joins the effort to stop the corruption. Alongside saving Corel, One is searching for answers about her own past and identity. Fading Echo is a single-player game, and its PS5 demo is available now alongside the full release.
