American Football is an American band from Urbana, Illinois, formed in 1997. The group was initially active until 2000 and reformed in 2014. The band was founded by Mike Kinsella, who played guitar, bass, and provided vocals; he was previously a member of Cap'n Jazz and Joan of Arc and is currently part of Owen. Guitarist Steve Holmes, also a member of the Geese, and drummer and trumpet player Steve Lamos, formerly of the One Up Downstairs and associated with other bands, completed the original lineup. Lamos announced his departure in 2021 but rejoined the band in 2023. Despite their brief initial period, their self-titled debut album gained recognition as a significant record in emo and math rock. After reuniting, the band released two additional albums, both titled American Football, in 2016 and 2019. A fourth album, also titled American Football, was scheduled for release on May 1, 2026.
