Their early music combined elements of Southern rock, garage rock, and blues influences, and over time their sound evolved to include various genres with a more alternative rock orientation. The band gained initial success in the United Kingdom, with nine top 40 singles and two BRIT Awards in 2008. Their albums at that time all reached the top five of the UK Albums Chart, with their third album, Because of the Times, reaching No. 1. Following the release of Only by the Night in September 2008, Kings of Leon achieved notable chart success in the United States, with singles such as "Sex on Fire," "Use Somebody," and "Notion" all peaking at number one on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. The album became their first platinum-selling record in the United States and was the best-selling album of 2008 in Australia, earning a nine-times platinum certification. Their fifth album, Come Around Sundown, was released on October 18, 2010.
