Inspiral Carpets are an English rock band formed in Oldham in 1983. They are associated with the late-1980s and early-1990s Madchester movement and are known for incorporating organs and distorted guitars, with influences from psychedelic rock. The band's most successful lineup included frontman Tom Hingley, drummer Craig Gill, guitarist Graham Lambert, bassist Martyn Walsh, and keyboardist Clint Boon. The band initially performed under the name "The Furs," with Lambert forming line-ups with various past members until he and singer Stephen Holt met at The Moor End indie disco in 1983. Holt sang on the band's first two independent singles but left before they signed with Mute Records. Tom Hingley joined the band later and remained until his departure in 2011, though the circumstances of his exit are disputed among members. The band continued with Holt rejoining at times. Following Gill's death in 2016, the band was inactive until they announced on 17 October 2022 that they would reform and tour the UK in March and April 2023.
