DEVO

Devo is an American new wave band formed in Akron, Ohio, in 1973. The band's classic lineup included two sets of brothers: Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh, who provided vocals and lead guitar respectively, and Gerald and Bob Casale, who played bass and rhythm guitar. Drummer Alan Myers was also a member of the group. Devo is primarily known for their 1980 single 'Whip It,' which was their only entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The band is recognized for their distinctive visual presentation, which incorporates stage shows and costumes that reflect kitsch science fiction themes, surrealist humor, and satirical social commentary. The concept of "de-evolution," a tongue-in-cheek social theory, was central to their early work, characterized by experimental and dissonant art punk that combined rock with electronic music. Throughout the 1980s, their style evolved to include synth-pop and a more mainstream sound, while maintaining their satirical and quirky humor. Devo's music has influenced various genres, including new wave, industrial, and alternative rock, and contributed to the development of an internet microgenre known as "devo-core." The band, especially Gerald Casale, was also a pioneer in the development of the music video format.
