KMD was an American hip hop trio active from 1988 to 1994. The group consisted of brothers Daniel "Zev Love X" Dumile and Dingilizwe "DJ Subroc" Dumile. The original third member, Jade 1, left before the group signed with Elektra Records and was replaced by Onyx the Birthstone Kid. KMD released two studio albums, Mr. Hood in 1991 and Black Bastards, recorded in 1993 but not officially released until 2000. The group disbanded in 1994 following DJ Subroc's death in 1993, the departure of Onyx, and conflicts with Elektra Records. Zev Love X later adopted the moniker MF DOOM and pursued a solo career. In the 2010s, MF DOOM attempted to revive the KMD name, releasing two songs, "Sorcerers" and "True Lightyears," and announcing a comeback album in 2017, but no further recordings or updates were made before his death in October 2020.
