SUEDE

Suede, known as the London Suede in the United States, is an English rock band formed in London in 1989. The band was founded by singer Brett Anderson, guitarist Justine Frischmann, and bassist Mat Osman. Their music drew from glam rock and post-punk influences. In 1992, Melody Maker named them "The Best New Band in Britain," and their debut album, Suede, reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, becoming the fastest-selling debut album in nearly a decade. The album won the Mercury Music Prize and contributed to the emergence of the Britpop era, although the band distanced themselves from the label. The recording sessions for their second album, Dog Man Star, were tumultuous, resulting in guitarist and songwriter Bernard Butler leaving after conflicts with other members. Richard Oakes replaced Butler on guitar and joined the band before the subsequent tour. Although initially a commercial disappointment, Dog Man Star received positive reviews upon release and has since been regarded as a significant album in rock music. In 1994, Suede was recognized as part of Britpop's "big four," alongside Oasis, Blur, and Pulp.
