U2 is an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1976. The group consists of Bono (lead vocals), the Edge (lead guitar, keyboards, and vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums and percussion). The band was initially rooted in post-punk and has evolved its musical style over the years while maintaining an anthemic quality characterized by Bono's expressive vocals and the Edge's effects-based guitar sounds. Bono's lyrics often include spiritual imagery and address personal and sociopolitical themes. U2 is known for their live performances and has staged several elaborate tours. The band was formed when the members were teenagers attending Mount Temple Comprehensive School and had limited musical proficiency. They signed with Island Records within four years and released their debut album, Boy, in 1980. Their first UK number-one album, War, was released in 1983, along with singles such as "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "Pride (In the Name of Love)," which contributed to their reputation as a socially and politically conscious group. Their fourth album, The Unforgettable Fire, released in 1984, was their first collaboration with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, resulting in a more abstract, ambient sound.
