Following the announcement in the past week that he was deciding to leave Franz Ferdinand, Nick McCarthy has certainly moved quickly - announcing his brand new project Manuela.
Teaming up with his wife Manuela Gernedel (the name makes sense now - Ed), it’s stripped-back indie in all its glory, demonstrated by 'Cracks In The Concrete' - a lo-fi groover if we ever heard one.

All Points East 2026: Nell Mescal is nearly home, if she can find one first

She's spent four years writing brilliant songs about leaving - school, Ireland, friendships, the lot. New single 'Settles' is the first one about staying put, and it arrives with a flat hunt and a summer that includes a sold-out show at Lorde's All Points East. Funny how these things work out.

Talking about the track Gernedel said:
“Lyrically Cracks In The Concrete, like much of the album, is skipping back and forth between a narration and internal monologue. The line “cracks in the concrete” was partly inspired by the French phrase “sous les páves, la plage!” which came up during the student revolts there in May ’68. Roughly translated it says “there is sand underneath the pavement!” It’s talking about the potential of things breaking and breaking up things. Everything is morbid and falling apart and you have to keep on telling yourself that it’s going to work itself out (“everything is healing”)”
