Girl Group fight back against pressure with ‘Flink Pike’ ahead of their debut EP

The Nordic-inspired single critiques society’s unrealistic expectations of young women through surreal visuals and powerful feminist messaging.

Liverpool five-piece Girl Group have shared their new single ‘Flink Pike’.

The track, which arrives via Boys Boys Boys, follows their debut single ‘Yay! Saturday’ and takes its name from a Nordic expression meaning “good girl”. The band explain the phrase is “often used to describe young women striving to meet impossible expectations.”

“We see young girls trying to perform to the pressure of being everything at once and completely agreeable—getting the best grades, being the life of the party, head of student council, etc. But it’s used to show how our expectations of young girls are much higher than those of young boys,” they say.

The accompanying video, inspired by Sofia Coppola and Wes Anderson, was filmed in a Liverpool ballet studio and sees the band members placed in a surreal audition setting.

Girl Group – comprising Katya, Maria, Thea, Mia, and Lil – formed while studying at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. “We’re all very opinionated and very feminist—but we had gone to this big music institution that still felt very closed out of this guy’s club. Even in studios, we were treated like guests,” Maria explains.
