Jungle - Sunshine
Not every summer romance needs to end in marriage.
Calling an album 'Sunshine' is effectively a promise, and Jungle duly arrive carrying enough musical SPF to see you through August. Their latest is warm, breezy and ridiculously easy to live with: a record for long evenings and occasions when thinking too hard would rather spoil the mood.
'Someday, Somewhere' captures the appeal neatly. Lydia Kitto's soulful vocal glides over electronic production and sun-drenched rhythms as the band reach for optimism and escape. 'Carry On' and 'The Wave' occupy similarly inviting territory, and there's no sudden clanger waiting to ruin the atmosphere: Jungle remain very good at making music that moves with an effortless-looking glide.
The problem is that 'Sunshine' can glide straight past you, too. Previous Jungle records have produced moments that immediately demanded another spin; here, that cut-through is harder to find and fewer tracks leave much of a mark once they're over.
Still, disposability isn't automatically a crime. Not every summer romance needs to end in marriage. 'Sunshine' knows exactly what it wants to provide and delivers it handsomely: good vibes and good grooves.
