About Howling Bells
Howling Bells are an Australian indie rock band formed in Sydney, New South Wales, in 2004. The band later relocated to the United Kingdom. The original lineup included siblings Juanita and Joel Stein, who provided vocals, guitar, and lead guitar, respectively, along with drummer Glenn Moule. For live performances, bassist Jimi Wheelwright joined the group. The band was initially called Waikiki but changed its name and musical style before moving from Australia to England. Their self-titled debut album, produced by Ken Nelson, was released in 2006 and charted in both the UK and Australia. The album appeared on several year-end lists. Their second album, Radio Wars, released in 2009, charted higher than their debut but received mixed reviews. The third album, The Loudest Engine, came out in 2011 and received largely favorable reviews, though it underperformed commercially compared to previous releases. Their fourth album, Heartstrings, was released in June 2014. A fifth album, Strange Life, was scheduled for release in February 2026. The band has described their sound as "melodic blues" and "country-goth."
