About Pavement
Pavement is an American indie rock band formed in Stockton, California, in 1989. The band’s lineup included vocalist and guitarist Stephen Malkmus, guitarist and vocalist Scott Kannberg, bassist Mark Ibold, drummer Steve West, and vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Bob Nastanovich. Originally conceived as a recording project, Pavement initially avoided press and live performances while gaining underground attention through early releases. Over time, the band developed a more polished sound and recorded five full-length albums and ten EPs during their active years. The group disbanded in 1999 amid some disagreements, as members pursued other projects. In 2010, Pavement reunited for a tour that was well received, and they conducted another international tour from 2022 to 2024. Although they achieved only brief mainstream success with the single 'Cut Your Hair' in 1994, Pavement maintained a primarily independent approach, remaining signed to labels such as Flying Nun and Matador. The band is regarded as one of the most influential acts to emerge from the American underground scene in the 1990s.
