Stephen Joseph Malkmus (born May 30, 1966) is an American musician known as the primary songwriter, lead singer, and guitarist of the indie rock band Pavement. The band initially formed as a duo and later expanded to a quintet, releasing five studio albums before disbanding in 1999. During and after his time with Pavement, Malkmus participated in several side projects, including contributing guitar on three albums with The Silver Jews. Following Pavement's breakup, he pursued a solo career with the backing band the Jicks. He performs with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Pavement, The Hard Quartet, and as a solo artist.
