About This Track
'Split' finds 88rising and NIKI mapping the fractured geography of displacement. The song opens on a West Coast winter where the sun refuses to behave seasonally, a climate that mirrors the singer's own divided state: saturated in equal parts sun and doubt, caught between the dry heat of where she lives and the rain falling elsewhere, where her father is in Jakarta and her mother waits at home. The specificity of these details anchors what could be a generic homesickness into something more precise: the disorientation of belonging nowhere fully. The song's real subject is not nostalgia but the exhaustion of perpetual division. NIKI describes herself spread thin, emotionally depleted, speaking a language in her head that differs from the one around her. Where she is from, she was taught to be somebody else; where she lives now, the belief is that you only have yourself. Hellos are short, goodbyes only half farewells. She does her best between addresses, forever caught between two worlds, right foot rock and left foot hard place, head and heart at war. The chorus lands on a quiet recognition: always part of her is missing, but no one sees the difference because she splits them all. It is a song about the invisible labour of living across borders, the way displacement becomes a kind of performance no one notices you are giving.
