Written by Adele with producer Francis White, 'Chasing Pavements' appeared as the second single from her debut album '19', released on 14 January 2008. The lyric emerged from a West End bar argument with a boyfriend; Adele stormed out and ran down Oxford Street, watching the wide pavements stretch ahead whilst he failed to follow. The title literalises that moment of futile pursuit.

The song frames romantic doubt as a series of unanswered questions. Adele asks whether she should keep chasing pavements even if it leads nowhere, the refrain cycling through scenarios of wasted effort and uncertain commitment. The production pairs her voice with restrained instrumentation, letting the indecision sit plainly in the room. It is love, she insists, not lust, but the certainty stops there; the rest is hesitation made audible.
