About This Track
Arca declares autonomy and self-determination across 'Nonbinary', a track built on refusal. The song moves through assertion and provocation in equal measure: she works hard, she's lucky, she's unlucky, and she will not be read or managed by external judgment. The lyrics pivot between confidence and a kind of performative fluidity, the voice shifting registers to accommodate different versions of herself. What matters, the song insists, is that the versions belong to her alone. The track's title carries both literal and figurative weight. Arca sings of the freedom to be friendly or fake, real or false, sexy or sad, each state a choice rather than a contradiction. The interlude repeats the phrase "speak for your self-states", a refusal of singular identity and a demand that others do the same. It's a song about the exhaustion of being legible to others, and the refusal to make that legibility a priority.
