'1+1' is a slow-burning ballad from Beyoncé's fourth album, produced by Tricky Stewart, The-Dream, and Beyoncé herself. Released in 2011, the track strips away the strutting blockbusters elsewhere on the record in favour of a timeless, mid-tempo intimacy. The lyric builds its case on elementary arithmetic and absolute devotion. Beyoncé sings of a love that outlasts material loss and global catastrophe, the refrain 'make love to me' pitched not as seduction but as sanctuary. She admits ignorance of algebra, guns, and fighting, then pivots each confession into a declaration of what she does know: that one plus one equals two, that she's been shot by her lover, that she will fight for them.
