About This Track
Bladee moves through 'Gatekeeper' with the fractured energy of someone caught between desire and detachment. The track opens on a posture of desperate attachment, the chorus built around a refusal of easy comfort: he won't take handouts, won't play the industry game, won't be found after eight o'clock. There's a defiant self-sufficiency threaded through it, but it sits uneasily alongside the opening admission that someone else is the only reason his heart beats at all. The verses scatter between boasts and confessions. He counts like a coder, moves like a street magician, refuses association with other rappers. But the emotional logic keeps collapsing: he doesn't like her, he loves her, they don't work together anyway. A tribute to a departed friend sits oddly next to a comparison of Drain Gang to One Direction. The song doesn't resolve these contradictions so much as let them pile up, which is precisely where its tension lives. 'Gatekeeper' works best when you stop looking for coherence and just feel the push and pull.
