About This Track

Released in March 2017, 'No Promises' pairs the American DJ group Cheat Codes with Demi Lovato, whose vocal shares the track with group member Trevor Dahl. The collaboration emerged from a show the group played with Lovato in São Paulo in December 2016; fan demand for a joint release followed.

The song builds around a paradox of commitment and caution. Lovato and Dahl trade verses about the pull of a relationship neither party can quite trust, the chorus landing on a plea for mutual restraint: 'Promise me no promises'. The lyric acknowledges the ease of falling and the uncertainty of the catch, framing intimacy as a dive into water whose bottom neither swimmer can see. The hook's stacked 'na-na' refrain softens the warning without diluting it, the production keeping the tempo brisk and the mood conflicted rather than despairing.
