Written and produced by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers, 'Good Times' appeared as the opening single from Chic's third album, 'Risqué', in June 1979. The track topped the Billboard Hot 100 that August, the band's second number-one single. Edwards and Rodgers built the song around a bass line that would become one of the most sampled in popular music, its groove anchoring a production that distilled disco's optimism into four minutes of pure momentum. The lyrics, sung at Edwards' direction, offer a simple invitation: leave your cares behind, adopt a new state of mind, participate. Chic frame hedonism as a kind of civic duty, the verses cataloguing roller skates and clams on the half shell with the same deadpan enthusiasm they bring to the imperative not to be a drag. The repetition of the title phrase functions less as chorus than as mantra, the song's structure designed to extend the feeling rather than develop it. The bassline's influence would reach far beyond disco. Its clean, insistent pulse provided the foundation for early hip-hop, most famously in Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's 'The Message' and the Sugarhill Gang's 'Rapper's Delight', both of which interpolated Edwards' part wholesale. What Chic recorded as an anthem for the dancefloor became, within months, the bedrock of a different genre entirely.
