About This Track

'Confidence' finds Chris Brown in a smooth, island-inflected groove, the track built around a simple but potent hook that circles back to the pull of self-assurance. The song treats desire as a form of control, the narrator drawn to a partner's assertiveness and command. References to 'Fifty Shades' anchor the song's fixation on power dynamics and secrecy, the plea to keep their arrangement hidden running through both verse and chorus. Brown frames the affair as something fractured and incomplete, the second verse catching him caught between wanting more and the impossibility of having it. The production stays measured and sensual, letting the vocal melody do most of the work, whilst the repetition of the title phrase builds a kind of hypnotic pull.
