Fire Away

The second track from Stapleton's 2015 debut album 'Traveller', 'Fire Away' was co-written with Danny Green and produced by Dave Cobb. The song reached the top forty on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, a slow-burning ballad that builds its emotional weight through restraint rather than volume. Stapleton adopts the voice of someone offering themselves as a target for another's pain, the lyrics framing love as an act of willing vulnerability. The imagery moves between weaponry and shelter, the narrator inviting attack whilst acknowledging a pattern of return. The chorus refrain becomes less defiant with each repetition, the bravado undercut by the admission that follows: 'Your love might be my damnation / But I'll cry to my grave.'
