About This Track
Lionel Richie and Ronald LaPread wrote this escape fantasy for the Commodores' self-titled album. The song is a wish for world happiness and the hope for a better place, built around the repeated desire to "zoom" away from here to somewhere fresh and clear, where everybody can be what they want to be. It moves from personal longing through shared pain and games to a vision of universal freedom. The track stretches past six minutes, layering Richie's vocals with the group's harmonies in an extended outro that turns the central image into a communal chant. The band agreed it was the strongest song on the album but held it back from single release, reasoning that listeners would need to buy the full record to hear it.
