Devvon Terrell trades in straightforward desire and swagger on '679 Freestyle', a track built on the hook's simple arithmetic: a woman catches his eye, he wants her, and he's confident enough to say so. The production sits minimal, letting his voice occupy the space. He moves between boasts about his own appeal and observations about the women around him, the whole thing framed with a lightness that keeps it from feeling heavy-handed. The freestyle adopts a voice that's equal parts admiration and self-regard. He name-checks Kanye and references Fetty Wap, positioning himself in a lineage of artists unafraid to speak plainly. There's a playfulness to the writing, particularly in the image of rewinding past someone on the street, the joke landing because it's so literal. It's a track that knows exactly what it is: a young man's uncomplicated statement of intent, delivered with enough charm to make the directness work.
