'Pendulum' finds FKA twigs caught between desire and distance, singing of a love that cannot sustain itself. She positions herself as the devoted one, the "sweet, little love maker" trying to bridge a gap that only widens. The other person wants her in fragments, in "other spaces", never fully present. Twigs articulates the particular loneliness of that arrangement: "So lonely trying to be yours / When you're looking for so much more." The song moves through the emotional arithmetic of unequal attachment. She is older, more broken; he is younger, restless. Words fail where presence might have worked. What emerges is not anger but a kind of exhausted clarity, the recognition that some causes are forsaken before they begin.
