About This Track

Florence + the Machine builds 'Falling' around a deceptively simple conceit: the act of falling itself is not the problem. The song moves through literal tumbles (out of trees, from windows, off taxis) before arriving at the emotional reckoning that matters. Falling, she sings, brings a kind of peace; it is only impact that causes grief. The chorus crystallises this distinction with precision, separating the weightless suspension of descent from the damage that follows landing. The lyrics circle obsessively around erasure and repetition. A lover's name is scribbled out, yet love keeps writing it again and again; the bridge doubles down on this compulsion, stacking the phrase "and again" until it becomes almost incantatory. There is defiance here too. She is not scared to jump, not scared to fall, and if there were nowhere to land, she would not be scared at all. It is a song about the strange comfort of surrender, about preferring the unknown of the fall to the certainty of the ground.
