'The Runner' is built on a simple, driving mantra: keep moving forward, even when you fall. Foals construct the track around a repeating cycle of effort and resilience, the vocal hook "keep on running" becoming both instruction and incantation. The lyrics move through physical metaphors of shadow and distance, each verse reinforcing the same stubborn refusal to slow down or break. The song finds its emotional core in the closing refrain, which borrows the language of endurance athletics: "loneliness of the long distance runner". It's a shift from abstract exhortation to something more vulnerable, acknowledging that persistence carries its own weight. The shadows that close in are not obstacles to overcome so much as companions to the effort itself, inseparable from the act of going further.
"The Runner" is a single by Foals, from the album Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part II, released 8th March 2019. The track is 4:22 long. It's filed under Alternative. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 20 articles about Foals.
