About This Track

'Reste' pairs GIMS with Sting across a meditation on absence and devotion. The track moves between French and English, GIMS singing of a presence that haunts him like the moon and fire, whilst Sting offers counterpoint in English, his verses built on natural imagery: clouds veiling beauty, dice rolled on chance, flowers planted in desert hearts. The song's architecture mirrors its theme, voices circling each other without quite meeting, each speaker caught in the orbit of someone who may leave. The production holds space for both singers without crowding it. GIMS repeats his central question across the chorus, a simple plea of whereabouts and consequence, whilst Sting's contributions deepen the emotional register without answering. What emerges is less a duet than a doubled soliloquy, two men singing the same loneliness in different tongues, the song itself becoming the only place they truly occupy together.

"Reste" is a track by GIMS, from the album Ceinture noire : Transcendance, released 26th April 2019. Full lyrics are available below.

Lyrics

Reste

[Couplet 1 : Gims]

[Refrain : Gims]

Mais tu iras où, où, où si jamais je m'en vais ?

Ça m'rendrait eh, eh, eh si jamais tu partais

Mais tu iras où, où, où si jamais je m'en vais ?

Ça m'rendrait eh, eh, eh si jamais tu partais

[Couplet 2 : Sting]

Sometimes the Moon hides in the clouds so high above me

Her beauty veiled beyond my glances

But every morning leaves me wondering if she loves me still

I roll a dice and take my chances

I roll a dice and take my chances

[Refrain : Gims]

Mais tu iras où, où, où si jamais je m'en vais ?

Ça m'rendrait eh, eh, eh si jamais tu partais

Mais tu iras où, où, où si jamais je m'en vais ?

Ça m'rendrait eh, eh, eh si jamais tu partais

[Couplet 3 : Sting]

Just like the rain, she plants a flower in the desert of my heart

Until it withers in the sunlight

But as the hours pass, I pray for her returning to me

A lonely shadow in the moonlight

A lonely shadow in the moonlight

[Refrain : Gims]

Mais tu iras où, où, où si jamais je m'en vais ?

Ça m'rendrait eh, eh, eh si jamais tu partais

Mais tu iras où, où, où si jamais je m'en vais ?

Ça m'rendrait eh, eh, eh si jamais tu partais

[Pont : Gims]

Et derrière chacun de tes pas, je suis là mais tu n'me vois pas

C'est où, où, où ? Tu me vois pas

C'est où où où ? Mais je suis là

Et derrière chacun de tes pas, je suis là mais tu n'me vois pas

C'est où, où, où ? Tu me vois pas

C'est où où où ? Mais je suis là

[Couplet 4 : Gims]

[Refrain : Gims]

Mais tu iras où, où, où si jamais je m'en vais ?

Ça m'rendrait eh, eh, eh si jamais tu partais

Mais tu iras où, où, où si jamais je m'en vais ?

Ça m'rendrait eh, eh, eh si jamais tu partais

[Outro : Gims, Sting]

Mais tu iras où, où, où si jamais je m'en vais ?

Ça m'rendrait eh, eh, eh, a lonely shadow in the moonlight

Mais tu iras où, où, où si jamais je m'en vais ?

Ça m'rendrait eh, eh, eh, a lonely shadow in the moonlight

Où, où, où ? Lonely shadow in the moonlight
