About This Track

H.E.R. strips back the production on '2' to let her voice carry a song about romantic gamesmanship. The track moves through a relationship where both parties are caught in a cycle of infidelity and indifference, each pretending not to care whilst secretly keeping score. She repeats the central claim with mounting certainty: "I was playing you too", a refrain that hardens from confession into victory lap. The song's architecture is minimal, built around H.E.R.'s vocal delivery as it shifts from cool detachment to something closer to defiance. There are no rules now, she sings, and the freedom that comes from that realisation feels like its own form of power. The repetition of the hook becomes hypnotic rather than heavy-handed, each iteration adding weight to the idea that she was never the one being played.
