'U' arrives fourth on H.E.R.'s debut EP, a track built around the alphabet's simplest letter and the most tangled romantic arithmetic. Over dimmed, sleepy production, she maps the arithmetic of one-sided devotion: the stress of caring more, the exhaustion of holding someone down who only wants to show off. H.E.R. sings 'It could be u-s, there's so many letters but it's only u', the hook turning a child's spelling lesson into a statement of misplaced focus. The lyric catalogues the small humiliations of asymmetry, friends issuing warnings, public displays designed to embarrass, the creeping realisation that loyalty has been mistaken for leverage. Her vocal carves sharp melodic patterns through the haze, gorgeous and precise, turning lines like 'I'm so tired of you taking advantage of love' into enthralling moments of 21st-century soul.
