About This Track

'U' arrives fourth on H.E.R.'s debut EP, a track built around the alphabet's simplest letter and the most tangled romantic arithmetic. Over dimmed, sleepy production, she maps the arithmetic of one-sided devotion: the stress of caring more, the exhaustion of holding someone down who only wants to show off. H.E.R. sings 'It could be u-s, there's so many letters but it's only u', the hook turning a child's spelling lesson into a statement of misplaced focus. The lyric catalogues the small humiliations of asymmetry, friends issuing warnings, public displays designed to embarrass, the creeping realisation that loyalty has been mistaken for leverage. Her vocal carves sharp melodic patterns through the haze, gorgeous and precise, turning lines like 'I'm so tired of you taking advantage of love' into enthralling moments of 21st-century soul. The track holds the tension between what is and what could be, refusing easy resolution.

"U" is a track by H.E.R., from the album H.E.R., Vol. 1, released 8th September 2016. The track is 2:59 long. It's filed under R&B/Soul. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 3 articles about H.E.R..

Lyrics

U

Right now my head is a mess, thinking bout' you got me stressed
But you could probably care less, you're just so hard to impress
Everytime that we go out, you do something to show out
Played the fool, but I know now
I always worry bout' you, I only tell you the truth
I'm not like those other girls, I don't be acting brand new
Everytime that we go out, you do something to show out
Played the fool, but I know now

It could be u-s, there's so many letters but it's only u
Only u, only only only u, only u

My friends say you not about me, I wasn't trying to believe in
I'm always holding you down, even tho you mess around
You ain't showing me no love, you just want me too show off
Played the food but I know now

It could be u-s, there's so many letters but it's only u
Only u, only only only u, only u
It could be u-s, there's so many letters but it's only u
Only u, only only only u, only u

Boy I wish that you would see this could be us
Ooh I'm so tired of you taking advantage of love

It could be u-s, there's so many letters but it's only u
Only u, only only only u, only u
It could be u-s, there's so many letters but it's only u (it's only u)
Only u (it's only u), only only only u (it's only u), only u (it's only u)
