'1944' confronts the mass deportation of Crimean Tatars under Stalin's regime, a historical trauma that reverberates through Jamala's own family. The English lyrics speak directly to the violence of displacement: strangers arriving, lives ended, perpetrators claiming innocence. Alongside them sits the Crimean Tatar chorus, words drawn from a folk song called 'Ey Güzel Qırım' that Jamala heard from her great-grandmother, anchoring the song in lived memory and generational loss. Musically, the track builds from restraint to something more urgent. A duduk, the traditional Armenian woodwind, colours the arrangement, whilst the vocal technique employed carries the weight of Turkic musical tradition. The song refuses easy resolution, cycling through its refrain of dispossession and asking where humanity's heart has gone. It is a ballad that moves between accusation and elegy, between the specific historical wound and the universal cry against those who believe themselves above consequence.
