About This Track

'Happy' opens Puberty 2 as a portrait of emotional dependence rendered in deceptive domestic simplicity. Mitski's voice carries a haunting quality as she describes happiness as a visitor who arrives with cookies and tea, then departs, leaving only wrappers and the need to clean. The song's genius lies in its literalism: happiness is not a state but a person, temporary and ultimately indifferent to the narrator's pleas for permanence. The chorus transforms into something closer to a farewell letter. Mitski asks the departing figure to take the train, take the moon, take her heart itself, since she will have no use for it once he is gone. There is no melodrama here, only a quiet arithmetic of loss. The song moves between the mundane (cleaning up after a guest) and the absolute (surrendering one's capacity to feel), collapsing the distance between them until both feel equally inevitable.
