About This Track
'Australopithecus' by Modest Mouse is an alternative track from the album 'Sad Sappy Sucker' (2001). The lyrics cast the creature as a “friend to the end”, then loop through the idea of things repeating until a relationship moves on. There is a childlike, domestic scene of chasing cat and dog, but it comes with a worried edge, as the speaker keeps asking what is wrong. The tone shifts between companionship and impatience, giving the whole verse a slightly haunted sense of near-missed closeness.
