About This Track

'Breakthrough' by Modest Mouse is an alternative track on 'This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About' (1996). The lyrics sketch a chaotic count-in, with someone running around the neighbourhood while a pejorative jinx is traded off. A well intentioned line about a groom and a plate of rice turns sour into bad advice, pushed along by an insistent chant, ending with the exhortation to “Let it breakthrough, oh”. It is funny, frantic, and pointed, with the momentum of slogans doing more than smoothing over the mess.
