Mt. Joy's 'Julia' finds the band caught between mundane anxiety and yearning for transcendence. The song opens in a restaurant, where nervous energy and self-consciousness crystallise around a waitress's smile, but the real drama unfolds in the gap between that small, human moment and the sprawling interior landscape the lyrics map out. References to TED Talks and fluorescent lights anchor the song in a particular kind of modern restlessness, one that chases self-improvement and meaning without quite finding either. The chorus pivots to address Julia directly, asking how long until everything dissolves. There's no clear answer, only the image of stumbling down Elysian Fields, caught between the Devil and the desire for someone to lead the way. Mt. Joy builds the track around this tension between paralysis and motion, between the wish to be fixed and the knowledge that you might not be fixable. The melody carries the weight of that ambivalence without resolving it.
