About This Track
Nas reflects on three decades of survival and success, his voice steady over an orchestral opening that gives way to tremolo and organ-driven production. The track finds him in a mode of reckoning: he counts his wins (the Porsches, the longevity, the field he shaped before drill became a thing), but also his costs. There's a weariness in how he acknowledges the divorces, the vilification, the sense that his achievements keep getting buried by agenda. Yet he refuses the narrative of decline. "I'm goin' on thirty summers," he repeats, a mantra that sounds less like boasting than like testimony. Hit-Boy's production holds the whole thing in a kind of suspended grandeur, orchestral and trap at once, which matches Nas's own refusal to choose between street credibility and star status. He moves between the two registers without apology, and the song's real power lies in that refusal to simplify. By the end, "30" becomes less a celebration of a specific age than a statement about endurance itself: he's still here, still moving how he wants, still making numbers.
