About This Track
Nas constructs a narrative in reverse, beginning with a murder plot and unravelling backwards through a sexual encounter, a phone call, a moment in a van, and finally arriving at the moment the story truly begins. The conceit is simple but demanding: every action moves in the opposite direction, every word and gesture undone. A bullet returns to its chamber. Smoke retreats into a blunt. Clothes fall away and then reassemble. The device forces you to read the song twice to understand it properly, which is precisely the point. The production supports this temporal inversion without fanfare. Nas moves through the narrative with the clarity of someone recounting a sequence of events, his voice steady and unhurried, letting the backwards logic do the work. There's no strain in the performance, no winking at the listener. He simply tells the story as it unreels, and the listener catches up. By the time you reach the voicemail that sets everything in motion, the song has already shown you where it ends.
