About This Track

A breakup retrospective built on regret and relief in equal measure. NF and Julia Michaels trade verses about a relationship that was doomed from the start, two people who wanted different futures and lacked the courage to end things cleanly. The song moves between recrimination and acceptance, each voice acknowledging their own role in the slow collapse: miscalculation, incompatibility, the weight of holding on to something already dead. What makes the track work is its refusal to settle into bitterness. Both singers arrive at the same conclusion, expressed in the chorus with a kind of exhausted grace: they're already gone, and that's the best thing that could have happened. The melody carries a melancholy undertow, but the sentiment is fundamentally generous, a prayer that the other person finds happiness elsewhere. It's a song about the relief that comes when you finally stop fighting.
