About This Track
A track built from repetition and unease, 'Sifting' moves through fragments of anxiety and deflection. The song circles around a refrain of refusal, "Don't have nothing for you", whilst the verses sketch scenes of discomfort and judgment: wet beds, teachers, preachers, the weight of being watched. Kurt Cobain's delivery is flat and declarative, letting the words land without melodrama. The structure is deliberately sparse. A simple riff supports the vocal, which repeats its hook with the kind of mechanical persistence that turns a phrase into something closer to a mantra or a wall. There is no resolution, no catharsis; the song ends as it began, cycling through the same negation. It is a record of refusal masquerading as a pop song.
