‘Turnaround’ by Nirvana is a 1992 track from the album ‘Hormoaning (EP)’. The lyrics cast the act of self-examination as something that happens on command, with the speaker urging a step outward and then a turn back towards who the self is, and what it amounts to. The tone is wary, almost theatrical, as the words insist on how “pretty scary” self-recognition can feel, before shifting into sharper contempt and dismissal. The second verse enlarges the gaze beyond the city, but the same unnerving reversal returns, the turn signalling that the subject is the problem, not the view.
