Oliver Tree's 'Jerk' is a rock song about the exhaustion of knowing someone who treats you with contempt. The track cycles through a familiar dynamic: dismissal, insult, withdrawal, then the same pattern again. Tree's narrator watches it repeat, each cycle wearing him down further, until he reaches a point of resignation. The song's title does the work of the chorus, a simple naming of the behaviour that has become unbearable. What makes 'Jerk' effective is its refusal to dramatise. Tree doesn't plead or rage; he states facts. You call me worthless. You don't want me. I'm better off alone. The repetition in the lyrics mirrors the repetition in the relationship itself, the sense that this will happen again and again.
