A meditation on dissociation and escape, 'Gently' finds Slipknot's narrator retreating into a state of mental reprieve. The song traces the contours of that withdrawal: a conscious decision to step away from the weight of reality and past trauma, to let pressure and pain drift toward the back of the mind. There is a strange calm in the lyrics, a surrender to the need for respite that feels almost rational in its acceptance. The track carries weight precisely because it does not dramatise the impulse. Clown wrote the song before Slipknot formed, and when the band re-recorded it for this album, the arrangement became heavier and darker than its original form, the production matching the emotional gravity of the subject. What emerges is a piece that holds both the fragility of the desire for escape and the inevitability of return. The narrator knows the reprieve is temporary, that life will call them back. That knowledge, and the resignation it brings, is the song's quiet centre.
